Outfoxed: Nevada’s Sumner dusts competition at Nevada Speedway ‘Bushwhacker Special’
Nevada’s Foxie Sumner is back with a vengeance.
After a three-year hiatus from the sport, the local product has reemerged in top form, blazing to victory in back-to-back weeks at Historic Nevada Speedway.
Sumner’s latest triumph came Saturday night at the speedway’s annual “Bushwhacker Special,” as the local legend flew the checkers in the Mini-Stock division.
Midwest Mods
The night’s headline event, however, was the Midwest Mod division’s 15-lap feature, and its $500 purse.
Colt Cheevers took an early lead and never relinquished it, as the Ozark-native claimed the $500 grand prize.
After winning the first two Midwest Mod features of the season, Brayton Skaggs was unable to duplicate that success, instead settling for a strong runner-up finish.
Fellow Fort Scotian Trevor Vann trailed Skaggs in the third-place spot, while Hartville native Trent Wynn finished in fourth. Rounding out the top five finishers, was El Dorado Springs native Kelby Keith.
Mini Stocks
Picking up right where he left off last week, Sumner was once again the head of the class in the Mini Stock division.
Sumner, who started on the pole, flew the checkers, while Weldon Rotramel moved up in the field en route to the second-place finish. Meanwhile, Sheldon-native Mike Baxter slotted into third; Prescott’s Katie Brown, fourth; and Hume’s Clayton Brown, fifth.
Pure Stocks
It was pure joy for Jerry Wheeler, as the Nevada product notched his first career Pure Stock Victory on Saturday. Points leader Zachary Hendren made life difficult for Wheeler, but was eventually relegated to the second-place finish.
Carl Junction’s Thomas Dunham sped into third, Christopher Sawyer, fourth; and Osawatomie’s Justin Shadden, fifth.
B-Mods
Since the Speedway season opened a little more than a month ago, Liberal’s Matt Rose has ruled over the B-Mod division.
On Saturday, however, Fort Scott’s Jerry Morgan flew the checkers — dethroning the B-Mod king for a week. Rose, Nevada Speedway’s defending track champion, took home the consolation prize — second-place payout.
Adrian’s Alan Ferguson navigated through the field, working his way up to a strong third-place finish. After battling it out with Ferguson, Eric Atwood slotted into fourth, and David Moore, fifth.
A-Mods
Rusty Skaggs has been flat out dynamite, as the Fort Scott native flew the checkers, capturing his third victory of the young season. El Do’s Lucas Dobbs put forth a valiant effort, but was unable to overtake Skaggs.
Dobbs narrowly held on to second, fending off Seneca’s John Romesburg, who placed third. In his first-career A-mod feature event, Zachary Whitaker zoomed into fourth, while, Harrisonville’s Jimmy Smith nabbed fifth.
Late Models
Craig Wood continues to have a stranglehold on the Late Model division.
A victory Saturday night handed the red-hot Wood his fourth victory of the season, as the El Do native is a perfect four-for-four to open the 2018 speedway campaign.
Wood was able to hold off a late challenge from Rusty Skaggs, who was behind the wheel of Dylan Timmermon’s ride.
Skaggs, who slotted into second, was trailed by third-place finisher — Rich Hill’s Billy Humble. After falling back two spots, Pea Ridge’s Tammy Mitchell concluded with a fourth-place finish, and Frontenac’ Mike Bitner, fifth.
