Cottey golfers compete at Missouri Valley Invitational
A pair of Cottey Comet golfers hit the links Monday and Tuesday for the Missouri Valley College Fall Invitational at Indian Foothills Golf Course in Marshall.
It was Cottey’s first 36-hole competition of the season, and third event overall.
Evangel University’s Emma Oathout and Allison Weiderman of Bethany (Kan.) College finished in a tie for first, each carding a final 36-hole score 14-over-par 158.
Cottey sophomore Rachel Hancock notched a strong showing on the (fast course) 18-hole par 72, 5,853 yard layout. Hancock concluded the opening round tied for sixth-place, after firing a 13-over-par 85.
Hancock then returned to the links Tuesday, wrapping play with a round two 17-over-par 89, en route to an eighth-place finish at the 32-player event. For the tournament, Hancock carded a 30-over-par 174.
“While this wasn’t Rachel’s best performance of the fall schedule, she is getting better,” noted first-year Cottey head coach Eric Cameron. “All of her yardages are changing. Once she gets a better handle how to (adjust), her scores will dip into to the 70’s.”
Hancock has been red-hot, as the Scottsbluff (Neb.) product was fresh off a fifth-place showing in her previous outing at the Sept. 15 Graceland (Iowa) Invitational, carding an 18-hole 85.
“The course at Graceland was a true test to how the collegiate yardages differ from high school, as the course played almost 6,000 yards,” said Cameron, of the Larimore, Iowa links.
Added Cameron: “Scores going up a little was expected. Rachel’s 85 is a good sign of what she is capable of.”
Cottey’s other competitor, freshman Kimberlee Scott, tallied a two-day total 41-over-par 185 in Marshall, en route to a personal best collegiate score.
Scott, of Holly Lake Ranch, Texas, carded a round one score 20-over-par 92, and final round score 21-over-par 93.
“It was exciting to see Kim shoot a personal best score on a course playing over 5,800 yards,” noted Cameron. “We have been working hard on her fitness, to increase her power, in order to handle the larger distances — and it is paying off.”
Concluded Cameron: “Once Kim brushes up on some short-game issues, her scores should drop below 90.”
At the Graceland Invitational, Scott tied for 35th after carding an 18-hole 108.
