Nevada Middle School basketball teams blast Butler

The Nevada Middle School seventh and eighth-grade basketball teams rolled to a pair of victories over Butler on Monday night.
The Nevada eight-grade team came out on top, 33-26, while the seventh-grade Lady Tigers thrashed the visiting Lady Bears, 41-2.
The eighth-grade Lady Tigers led 12-2 after one quarter of play, and 20-11 at the half. Butler was then able to stay close in the second half, outscoring Nevada 15-13.
For the Lady Tigers, point guard Maddy Majors dropped in a game-high 13 points, while forward Franki Fine chipped in nine.
In the seventh-grade contest, the rout was on from the opening tip, as Nevada led 13-0 at the conclusion of the first, 28-2 at the break, and 39-2 at the conclusion of the third quarter.
Lakyn Applegate led the way with a game-high 10 points. Clara Swearingen added eight, while Abbi Balk and Lindey Wilson chipped in seven points apiece.
The victories move both the Nevada seventh and eighth-grade teams to 2-0 overall.
“The first half, we were able to get out and run quite a bit, and get a lot of open lay-ups,” said Nevada seventh-grade head coach Danny Penn. “We were a little to sped up to start the game, and didn’t run our offense very well, but once we slowed down we did a better job.
With a 28-2 cushion, Penn discussed the halftime pep talk he delivered to his players.
“I told them that if they wanted to get out and get wide-open lay-ups the entire second half, they could,” began Penn. “But lets use this as an opportunity to run our offense and work on some things. There were probably five or six times in the second half where we had the ball out in front of any of their defenders — but we pulled it out and ran offense.”
