Sherwood misses the mark, blanked by Tigers, 4-0

The Sherwood Marksmen were off-target at the dish Wednesday evening, as Noah Cheaney’s seven-inning no-hitter propelled the Nevada Tigers to a 4-0 non-conference victory.
Nevada was then derailed by Cassville, 9-6, in a Big 8 West division road matchup Thursday.
The loss moves Nevada to 2-14 overall, and 1-3 in Big 8 West division play.
Hosting the Marksmen Wednesday evening at Lyons Stadium, Nevada broke open a scoreless contest with a run in the third, and then tacked on two in the fourth, and led 3-0.
Nevada then added an insurance run in the fifth, accounting for the final four-run margin.
Cheaney’s efficient 69-pitch outing, included 50 that went for strikes, while fanning seven Marksmen.
“He did a good job of attacking the strike zone, and pitching confidently,” said Nevada head coach, Danny Penn. “He had the mentality that they weren’t going to hit him hard, and he threw very well.”
Added Penn of Cheaney’s gem: “He didn’t nibble, or try to be too fine — he just trusted his stuff, and his defense to back him up. The no-no is a neat accomplishment for him, and a definite positive moment for him and our team.”
Penn indicated his club’s performance at the dish left a lot to be desired, as the Tigers were held to just five hits.
“Their pitcher threw with less velocity than we’d seen this year,” explained Penn “We knew that meant we should change our approach. But a number of us still struggle to actually sit back, and try to drive the ball the other way.
Continued Penn: “We had a lot of poor swings, but enough guys were able to make that adjustment for us. Lane (McNeley) continued to swing well, (and) Elijah (Nadurata) had another solid extra-base hit. And Grant (Miller) and Blake (Pryor) each sat back and drove it to right field.”
After falling to Cassville in Thursday’s high-scoring affair, Nevada is slated to resume Big 8 West division-play, with today’s road clash with archrival Lamar.
The contest was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but rained out.
