Lady Tigers sweep Clinton tourney

It was a sweet weekend on the hardwood for the Nevada Lady Tiger volleyball team, sweeping to their second consecutive first-place finish at the Clinton High School-hosted tournament.

Nevada's 5-0 record on the day started with a two-set win over Hillcrest High (25-12, 25-16). The Lady Tigers then drilled Osceola (25-11, 25-18). The two-set victories continued, as Nevada drubbed Warrensburg (25-14, 25-18).

The Lady Tigers dispatched host Clinton in the tournament semifinals (25-17, 25-15). In the championship match Nevada notched its fifth two-set victory of the day , knocking off Helias Catholic (25-21, 25-20).

Nevada senior middle hitter Lindley Ferry finished with a tournament team-high, 43 kills and eight blocks. Fellow senior teammate Stacy Pennington tallied 50 digs, 31 kills and eighth aces. Also for Nevada, Lindy Smith registered 96 assists and eight aces — while Lani Coonrod chipped in 35 digs.

The victories improve Nevada to 24-4-1 overall.

Prior to their Clinton tourney triumph, Nevada's varsity, junior varsity and C-teams were in action for a Big 8 Conference road matchup at Cassville — sweeping the hosts Thursday night.

Nevada's varsity spikers won in convincing fashion (25-11, 25-21). The Lady Tiger JV squad also flattened Cassville in two sets (25-9, 25-11), while Nevada's C-team dominated (25-18, 25-5).

For Nevada in the varsity contest Coonrd concluded with 21 digs, Smith 21 assists; Pennington 17 digs, nine kills and two aces; Lindley Ferry, 10 kills; and Emma Denman, three aces.

Nevada returns to the court tonight, as the Lady Tigers play host to Big 8 Conference foe McDonald County — on Dig for A Cure night at Wynn Gymnasium. The festivities kick off at 5 p.m. with the C-team contest.
