Sheldon stays hot on VB court
Fresh off their GVVC Conference Tournament championship over the weekend, the Sheldon Lady Panther spikers have continued their winning ways.
In a rematch of Saturday's GVVC title match, Sheldon dispatched the Northeast Vernon County Lady Knights in two sets, Monday at home. On senior night Tuesday, the Lady Panthers bested rival Bronaugh in two sets.
Against NEVC, Sheldon took the opening set — 25-20, and then triumphed with a 25-18 second-set victory.
"We knew that since this was a super-quick (turnaround) from the conference tournament (title match), NEVC would have something to prove," said Sheldon head coach, Emily Godsey, adding, she was pleased that her squad did not show any signs of letdown coming off the high of a tourney title.
Godsey Added: "This was also our Pink Out/Dig Pink Night. We raised money with a bake sale, silent auction, Mad Minute, t-shirt sales, and donations. We were able to present Lynn Johnston with $1,271 at the end of the night. We are so proud of our small school and community for pulling together to bless this lady."
For Sheldon, seniors Mahalia Swink and Nici Hits combined for 25 digs, while Madyson Bogart chipped in a half-dozen kills.
Against Bronaugh, Sheldon notched a 25-21 first-set victory, and then put the contest on ice — winning the second set 25-20. Fittingly, senior Hailey Hibbetts recorded the final three points of the match.
"Without having any practice since the conference tournament, I was concerned that some of the things we needed to adjust from Monday's game would be forgotten," Godsey noted. "I was wrong. We made the adjustments needed (on Bronaugh's) stellar hitters. We started off both sets slow. Once we kicked it into gear, we were (alert), moving, and doing good things."
Swink finished with 17 digs and five aces, while Hibbitts added seven kills and a pair of aces.
The victories move Sheldon to 12-13-1 overall.
