County schools ousted from district tourney-play
Despite valiant efforts, the volleyball seasons for area county schools concluded this week in district tournament-play.
The Hume Lady Hornets, Northeast Vernon County Lady Knights, and Bronaugh Lady Wildcats were in action at the Class 1 District 10 tournament in Rich Hill.
In opening-round play Monday, the Lady Hornets dispatched sixth-seeded Miami in two sets — 25-18, 25-20.
Matching up with second-seeded eventual tournament champion Rich Hill in the semifinals on Tuesday, Hume (11-12-1) was upended — 16-25, 14-25.
On the other side of the bracket, No. 4 seed NEVC edged past No. 5 Ballard in three sets Monday — 18-25, 25-13, 25-17. Against No. 1 seed Appleton City in the semis Tuesday, NEVC (9-10-1) was derailed — 9-25, 12-25.
In the championship match, host Rich Hill toppled Appleton City in three sets — 14-25, 25 -21, 25-15. Prior to the title match triumph, and victory over Hume in the semis, Rich Hill downed No. 7 seed Bronaugh (4-20-1) in the opening round — 14-25, 15-25.
Competing in the Class 1 District 9 tournament in Jasper on Monday, the No. 6 seed Sheldon Lady Panthers were bested by Greenfield in two sets — 6-25, 10-25. Champions of the GVVC conference, Sheldon concluded 12-13-1 overall.
