Lady Tigers derailed by Chicks in district volleyball tourney
The Nevada Lady Tiger volleyball team had their season come to an end in heartbreaking fashion at the Class 3 District 13 tournament in Clinton on Wednesday.
The top-seeded Lady Tigers received an opening-round bye. They were then pushed to three sets in the semifinals by No. 5 seed Clinton — prevailing 25-22, 23-25, 25-15.
With the semifinals and championship match taking place on the same night, the Lady Tigers squared of with No. 2 seed Pleasant Hill Chicks in the title bout.
In somewhat stunning fashion, Pleasant Hill (16-15-2) knocked off Nevada in two sets — 25-23, 25-22.
Considered the heavy favorites, Nevada entered the district tournament 25-5-1 overall, having won 14 of their past 15 matches. The Lady Tigers dominance this season was accentuated by the fact that 21 of their 26 victories were of the two-set sweep variety.
Stat leaders for Nevada's two matches in the tournament, were: Lindley Ferry with 27 kills and three blocks; Stacy Pennington 30 digs, 19 kills and four aces; Lindy Smith, 56 assists; and Lani Coonrod, 45 digs.
