Cameron soars to first-place finish at U.S. Kids Golf tour event
After a longer than expected layoff due to the coronavirus pandemic, 12-year-old Emree Cameron triumphed at the U.S. Kids Golf season-opening tour event in Kansas City this past weekend.
With Covid-19 pandemic protocols tightly enforced, the 18-hole event was held at Blue Springs Golf Club. After being idle from competitive-play since late November Cameron needed little time to knock the rust off, rolling to a dominant seven-stroke victory in the girls' 12-14 year-old age group. The consistent Cameron notched an even-par 72, firing a 36 on both the front and back-nine en route to the top finish.
"I've been working really hard, and to have most of my tournaments canceled was kind of upsetting," Cameron told the Daily Mail. "It felt really awesome when I actually got to go and play. I could have done better, but I was happy."
After bogeying the opening hole, Cameron bounced back with three consecutive birdies. The early run of success was sparked by a majestic 220-yard drive on the second hole, and ultimately capped off with the Nevada Middle Schooler sinking a 20-foot birdie putt. Looking to avoid a late letdown on the final hole of the front-nine, Cameron knocked her approach shot out of the left-side rough and into a strong wind, landing it within 25-feet of the hole and resulting in a par. Cameron concluded the one-day event with five birdies.
"I need to learn to not let a bad hole get to me, and also to play in the wind better," Cameron said, critiquing her performance.
“It has been a long layoff this year, but she did an outstanding job staying in shape and keeping her golf game dialed-in the last couple months," said Cameron's father and personal trainer, Eric. "I also commend the U.S. Kids Golf tour for hosting an event for these kids, and taking the extras steps to do so."
