University of Missouri in midst of COVID surge

Wednesday, September 2, 2020

The University of Missouri is currently in the midst of a COVID-19 surge at its Columbia campus in Boone County.

The university has reported a total of 549 cases, with a 46 percent increase from the three-day window between Aug. 31 and Tuesday. Those numbers include students, staff, and faculty.

The Blue Springs Examiner reported Tuesday that Boone County absorbed its worst three-day total during the timeframe — as the outlet noted 131 cases were tallied on Saturday, followed by 82 on Sunday, and an additional 85 Monday.

The University of Missouri is not the only Southeastern Conference School (SEC) to see a recent COVID spike, as the University of Alabama's Tuscaloosa campus eclipsed 1,000 coronavirus cases amongst students over the two-week period since the start of fall classes.

In addition, a Time article noted that more than 300 students tested positive for COVID prior to arriving to the Tuscaloosa campus, as the school conducted entry testing.

Those who tested positive were barred from reporting to campus.
