Lady Tiger golfers open season at Joplin invite
The Nevada Lady Tiger golf team opened its campaign at Wednesday's Joplin Lady Eagle Invitational, held at Schifferdecker Municipal Golf Course — placing eighth of 11 qualifying teams.
Leading the way for the Lady Tigers, Katie Pennington tied for 15th. Over 18 holes, Pennington carded a 38-over-par 109. After limited play last season, Nevada sophomore Riley Severence notched the best performance of her varsity career, firing a 43-over-par 114, and finishing tied for 26th. Scoring out with an identical score, Lady Tiger teammate Libby Barrett also tied for 26th. Rounding out Nevada's scoring, freshman Paige Hertzberger placed 53rd in her varsity debut.
"Weather-wise, it was a great day," said Nevada head coach, Brian Leonard. "Not too cold, and definitely not hot-and-humid. The girls had a good day on the course, and most importantly, everyone had fun. It was a great day for our Nevada Lady Tiger golfers."
Added Leonard: "The girls will continue to practice, and improve throughout the season. They have several personal records to focus on, with the end-goal to qualify for the state tournament in October.
Winning the tournament with a final score of 7-over-par 78, was McDonald County's Lily Allman.
