Nevada High's junior varsity football team dropped a heartbreaker to Cassville Monday evening, falling 26-22.

Cassville scored on its first offensive play from scrimmage, and with the successful two-point conversion, led 8-0. Nevada quickly replied, as Brice Budd broke off a 37-yard scamper to paydirt, and with the two-point play, knotted the contest 8-8.

Cassville edged back in front with a second quarter touchdown. Nevada then held them short of the goal line on the two-point play, as Cassville led, 14-8. Nevada chewed up the vast majority of the second quarter clock on the ensuing possession, but several penalty miscues prevented them from parlaying the lengthy drive into points.

Leading 14-8 at the break, Cassville extended its lead with a quick scoring drive to open the second half, going on top, 20-8. With Cassville back in possession and up 12, Nevada defensive back Tucker Duncan came up with a key interception. The Tigers took advantage of the turnover, as Budd's 50-yard touchdown romp, plus Gage Miller's successful rush on the two-point play, sliced the deficit to 20-16.

Cassville, however, struck back with a kickoff return for a touchdown, and led 26-16. Nevada's ensuing drive was an impressive one, as Tiger running backs Budd, Miller, Anthony Vance, Jeremy Rivas, Uda Mba, Blake Cox, and Duncan rolled up major yardage. The methodical drive was capped by Cox's one-yar TD run — trimming the deficit to 26-22.

Nevada quarterback Riddick Shook then connected with Lane Webb in the end zone, but a penalty negated the two-point play — accounting for the final four-point margin.

For the game, Nevada racked up 327 yards on the ground.

"The young men of the JV program are competing hard every week, and improving with every outing," said JV coach Chris Smoot. "They are exciting to watch, because they play hard, and they play for each other."
