The 2021 Cottey College golf season is off to a record start.

Though the Comets placed third out of four teams this past Monday and Tuesday at the season-opening Missouri Valley College Fall Invitational on the links of Indian Foothills in Marshall, their overall score of 705 (+129) set a new school record for lowest 36-hole event total. Cottey also earned the school’s record-best single-day 18-hole team total on Tuesday when the Comets shot a 342 (+54).

“I am excited about the future of this team,” stated Cottey head coach Eric Cameron, whose team opened day-one play with a 363. “They are all ahead of where I was expecting them to be so soon in the fall schedule.”

At the front of the pack thus far: Georgia Fraser, a freshman from Nixa who sank two birdies in her final round to tie for ninth place with a total score of 170 (+26). On the par-72 course, Fraser shot an 86 on day one and an 84 on day two.

Sarah Golden had the next best finish for the Comets, shooting an 89 on day one and an 86 on day two for a 175 (+31) overall, good enough for 14th.

Teammate Rachael Carver tied for 16th (178), Lou-Victoria Etound finished 19th (182), and Madeline Brennamen was 26th (209).

Central Methodist won the event with a team score of 642, three strokes ahead of second-place William Woods.

Cottey will be back in action early next week at the Columbia College Cougar Classic.
