Kimmell, Elkinton take district doubles

Nevada High School's no. 1 doubles team is now no. 1 in districts.

Senior Laura Kimmell and junior Halley Elkinton beat host Thomas Jefferson's no. 1 duo plus two pairs from Lamar to win the Class 1 District 12 doubles tournament Friday in Joplin.

After taking care of Lamar's no. 2 team 6-1, 6-2 to open bracket play, Kimmell and Elkinton cruised past TJ 6-1, 6-4. They then survived the championship match against Lamar's nos. 1, dropping the first set 6-7 before dominating 6-1 in the second — and winning the tiebreaker 10-3.

The Lady Tigers will return to district action on Monday for team competition, before individual sectionals begin on Friday.
