Nevada Tiger Wrestling Dominates on Senior Night
It was senior night at Wynn Gym for the Nevada Tiger Wrestling Program. The program recognized their seniors and their parents prior to the wrestling action against Aurora and Agape. Aurora who is a Big 8 conference opponent is in their first year of wrestling after a lengthy time without the sport and Agape is in their first year of having a wrestling program. That is great news for the sport of wrestling and for those athletes competing for Aurora and Agape.
In the first dual of the night Nevada would take on Aurora and win by a large margin of 63-6. Aurora had five wrestlers that competed against Nevada so the dual was over before it started but the Aurora wrestlers were tough and fought very hard in every match. Both schools were open at 106 and 113 pounds. Nevada’s Freshman Kason Clark took an open victory at 120 pounds and Freshman Myles Callaghan took an open victory for the Tigers at 126 pounds.
The first action of the night at 132 pounds saw Senior Mokey Dawn win by technical fall over Caymen Cornelison. Technical falls would be the theme of the dual for the Tigers. Junior Joseph Fahnstock took an open victory for Nevada at 138 pounds.
Freshman Gannon Marquardt would also win by technical fall over Luke Miller at 145 pounds. Technical fall is where one wrestler amasses a 15-point lead over their opponent, the match is stopped, and in the dual format, the winning wrestler’s team is awarded 5 points. Senior Ethan Dighero picked up an open win for the Tigers at 152 pounds followed Junior Jeremy Rivas picking up an open victory at 160 pounds. At 170 pounds, Sophomore Tyler Longobardi would win by Technical Fall over Janson Hunt of Aurora.
In his first action of the year, Senior Gauge Boyd would pick up a pin fall victory over Horacio Torres at 182 pounds. At 195 pounds, Sophomore Luke Anderson would pick up an open victory followed by Junior Kenneth Johnson at 220 pounds.
The dual ended with Freshman Brayden Penniston would be pinned by Orran Cope of Aurora. Penniston would wrestle hard and with a lot of heart, as he always does, despite giving up size and experience at heavyweight.
The final dual of the night was Nevada taking on Agape out of Stockton. Agape would have several wrestlers so there was JV action to begin the dual. The night started with Freshman Ethan Fahnestock picking up a quick pin over Joziah Tu of Agape at 138 pounds. At 152 pounds, Sophomore Robert Vance would pick up a 10-2 victory over Aaron Nelson for Agape. At 160 pounds, Rivas would pick up a pin fall victory for the Tigers over Ronald Grawvunder of Agape. Rounding out the jv action at 170 pounds was Sophomore Henry Campbell picking up the quickest pin of the night at nine seconds over Preston Bassett of Agape.
The varsity action would start at 120 pounds with Noah Koerper of Agape picking up a pin fall victory over Clark of Nevada giving Agape a 6-0 lead over the Tigers. At 126 pounds John Holzhauser of Agape would pick up another pin fall victory over Callaghan of Nevada giving Agape a 12-0 lead on the night. At 132 pounds Dawn would pick up the open victory for the Tigers making the team score 12-6 in favor of Agape.
At 138 pounds Joseph Fahnstock would even the dual by pinning Evariste Hewitt of Agape making the team score 12-12. Agape would take their final lead of the night at 145 pounds when Jeremiah Alvernas would pin Marquardt making the score 18-12 in favor of Agape. The Tigers would respond by picking up victories in six of the last seven weight classes. At 152 Dighero would pin Daniel Gowin making the team score 18-18. Longobardi would pick up an open victory at 160 pounds making the team score 24-18 in favor of the Tigers.
At 170 pounds Boyd would pick up his second pin of the evening over Dylan Belocura of Agape pushing the Tigers lead to 30-18. Andersen would follow with a pin over Noeah Chaney at 182 pounds making the score 36-18. At 195 pounds Junior Zade Lee would pin William Weseman of Agape making the team score 42-18 in favor of Nevada. At 195 pounds Johnson would pin Alex Hale of Agape making the team score 48-18 in favor of Nevada.
