Nevada R-5 Board of Education reviews election results, reorganizes board

The Nevada R-5 Board of Education met in regular session Wednesday evening to go over various topics. The meeting was called to order by Nevada R-5 Superintendent Tyson Beshore, and from there, the Nevada R-5 Board of Education appointed their members in new roles and reviewed certified election results.

The election results were as follows: Jeremy Fast (855 votes); Lois Ann Pendrak (784 votes); Alyson Wysong Harder (748 votes); and Adam Dean (683 votes). All three incumbents retained their seats. The board unanimously approved the results.

Next, the board completed their reorganization of roles. Joy Hawks was appointed as President; Allison Harder was appointed as Vice President; Michelle Sanderson was appointed as Treasurer; Michelle Hendricks was appointed as Secretary; and Lois Pendrak was appointed as the MSBA Delegate. The reorganization was unanimously board approved.

First in new business, the board considered out-of-state travel. The Nevada Regional Technical Center (NRTC) was seeking approval to send Alicia Weber and two students to the Skills USA National Conference in Atlanta, Ga., from June 19-23. NRTC was also seeking approval to send Maryann Wilson and four students to the National HOSA Conference in Dallas, Texas, from June 20-25. And, finally, NRTC was seeking approval to send Erin Mareth and two students to the Educators Rising National Conference in Orlando, Fla., on June 28-July 3. A motion to approve the out-of-state travel request was seconded and the board approved, 7-0.

Next in new business was the consideration of the 2023 Summer School Application. A motion to approve was presented and seconded and the board approved, 7-0.

Finally in new business was the consideration of Preferred Employment Services Worksite agreement. This would allow the district to be a host work site for a summer work program in the areas of cleaning, moving furniture, grounds crew, etc. Preferred Employment would cover liability insurance and payroll expenses. A motion to approve was presented and seconded and the board approved, 7-0.

In informational items, the following retirements and resignations were shared with the board:

• Mark Rosser will retire from Janitorial Services, effective on Oct. 31, 2023.

• Janna Robertson will resign as a third grade teacher, effective at the end of the 2023-2024 school year.

• Jessica Watts will resign as High School Dance Coach, effective at the end of the 2022-2023 school year.

• Shalene Gordon will transfer from first grade teacher to third grade teacher, effective at the end of the 2022-2023 school year.

• Julia McCaffree will transfer from second grade teacher to Title 1 teacher, effective at the end of the 2022-2023 school year.

• Kent Eastwood will resign as assistant high school football coach, effective at the end of the 2022-2023 school year.

• Wes Morton will resign as the Fine Arts Coordinator, effective at the end of the 2023-2024 school year.

A motion to adjourn the meeting was seconded and the board approved, 7-0. The meeting adjourned at 7:23 p.m., and the next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 10.
