Sheldon Board of Education informed of facility updates at Wednesday meeting
The Sheldon School Board of Education met on Wednesday morning, July 12, as President Jerod Lamb called the meeting to order. The financial report delivered by Superintendent Jason Irwin revealed a highly encouraging update. Irwin announced that their reserved balance at the end of June had reached a commendable level, which was met with satisfaction by the board members. Irwin also reported a significant surge of interest in the Missouri Course Access and Virtual School Program (MOCAP), reaching 4.9 percent. The board approved of Irwin’s report, including the payment of bills and the budget.
Moving forward, Irwin proceeded to discuss various matters concerning the school’s facilities. He first informed the board that an individual would be conducting water quality tests, specifically to check for any traces of lead, on July 25. Additionally, Irwin notified the board that broken windows had been replaced with boards and properly caulked. He also mentioned awaiting bids for a roof project and stated that the gym floor would be completed by the last week of the month. In terms of fuel supply, Irwin expressed his intention to start accepting bids. The Superintendent then highlighted the generous donation received from the Osage Masonic Lodge No. 303, aimed at installing a safe and secure system in the school. Irwin confirmed that the installation would soon take place. The board approved of Irwin’s comprehensive facilities report.
With no old business on the agenda, the board transitioned to new business. Irwin emphasized the importance of setting a date for a tax levy hearing, to ensure timely submission of their required portion. The board unanimously elected to hold the hearing on Aug. 16. The board also approved the implementation of the Learn Life Savers Class, aimed at students preparing to obtain their driver’s permits or licenses. During the meeting, the board also carefully reviewed the Student Handbook and decided to introduce a few additional discipline measures, update lunch bell schedules, and make a couple of minor changes.
Principal Kevin Post did not present a report, so Superintendent Irwin proceeded with his own report. Irwin addressed the urgent need for a school nurse, revealing that interviews had been conducted with four potential candidates. He also announced that he and Principal Post would be attending the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Conference at the end of the month. Irwin shared information about the “Feed The Kids” Program, developed by the Nevada YMCA. This initiative involved providing boxed meals to local children, ensuring they had something to eat while at home. The board approved of Irwin’s report.
The meeting was adjourned, with the next month’s gathering scheduled for Aug. 9.
