Nevada High School Wildlife Conservation Club completes service project
Recently, three members of the Nevada High School Conservation Club completed a service project at the Bungalows assisted family living facility. The Bungalows is located at 640 E. Highland Ave., in Nevada. Seniors, Kasen Ast and Drake Ketterman as well as Junior, Avery Dean erected a pole with four Shepard’s Hooks equipped with bird feeders. The purpose was to give members of the Bungalows enjoyment and relaxation as they view the various species of birds that will frequent the feeder. The feeders were strategically placed in an area that will allow viewers to have a clear sight line from outside seating during warmer fall days. As the weather gets colder, residents will be able stay inside to also view and enjoy winter time feedings by some of the favored backyard bird friends. Additionally, the feeders will be a welcomed food supplement to birds and other wildlife during winter’s harder times. The feeders will be filled throught the year due to a generous donation of feed from the Nevada MFA Incoporated feed store located at 905 E. Hickory St., in Nevada, Mo. It is the hope of the Conservation Club that the elderly members of the Bungalow community will get pleasure from viewing the wildlife.
The Nevada Wildlife Conservation Club was formed during the 2021-2022 school year. The goal of the club is to educate, encourage, and inspire youth to take a proactive role in Missouri conservation. Currently, the club meets during seminar (homeroom) on the second Wednesday of each month. On average, 20 to 30 students attend the meetings. Wildlife Conservation club is a, “Come and Go,” setting. There are no dues or expenses. The club is open to anyone in grades nine through 12 at Nevada High School. Each month features a special topic in wildlife conservation. Meetings typically consist of someone knowledgeable in their field of interest that can help introduce and inspire more young people to get involved in conservation and the outdoors. Meetings in the past have covered topics such as but not limited to: trapping, mushroom hunting, fly fishing, and timber stand improvement.
During the 2022-2023 the club achieved the title of, “Educational Club.” Currently the Wildlife Conservation Club has partnered with the Nevada Regional Technical Center through the conservation courses offered at the NRTC. Additionally, the Conservation Club has aligned with the high school science department with an emphasis on ecology. Missouri Science Learning Standards have been adopted and are included at each meeting.
At the September 2023 meeting, officers were elected democratically by their peers and are as follows. Gannon Marquardt, President; Avery Dean, Vice President; Jacob Dryer, Secretary; and Kasen Ast and Ella Heathman were appointed as Representatives at Large.
