Former Nevada Daily Mail Sports editor, Kelly Bradham wrote in 1984 about the 1963 Tiger Football season, “If greatness is born of adversity, the 1963 Nevada Tigers can be credited with giving birth to a stretch of greatness that didn’t begin to come unraveled until 1976. Often, it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact moment in time when misfortune bottoms out but anyone who was at Lamar on the night of October 4, 1963, has that moment frozen in the mind’s eye. The memory is of quarterback Stan Jones rolling out and being hauled down in the Nevada end zone for a Nevada safety. Those few sickening moments were followed in swift succession by a series of events that eventually transformed Nevada from perennial doormat to Big 10 Champions, not once, but four times in a ten-year period.”
