NEWTONIA – It will be known as the third Battle of Newtonia.

In September of 1862, the American Civil War was in its second year. In southwest Missouri, the tiny area of Newtonia, south and east of Neosho, would see close to 4,500 Union troops under General Fredirick Salomon attack 5,500 Confederate soldiers under the command of Col. Douglas Cooper on Sept. 28 in what was known as the First Battle of Newtonia. Confederate Colonel Joseph Shelby and his calvary, along with a brigade of Native Americans, would join forces with Cooper and defeat the Union troops. The Second Battle of Newtonia was fought two years later on Oct. 28, 1864 . The first and second Battles of Newtonia, both Confederate victories, were the final major armed conflicts of the Civil War in Missouri.
