For a number of years, this first week of June is when the rodeo is held in Nevada sponsored by the Vernon County Youth Fair Board. Once again this traditional event will be held this week, Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, which is the 17th year for the fair board to be sponsoring the rodeo. As a result both professional and amateur cowboys and cowgirls are and will be arriving in Nevada...

Dear editor: I would like to thank the Boy Scouts and their leaders, and the post office workers for their recent successful food drives. The pantry was beginning to get very low and the food drives came just in time. A special thank you goes out to all the residents who filled their bags with the much needed food. ...

Eunice Lorraine Doelling, 95, Nevada, passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at Moore-Few Care Center, in Nevada, following a brief illness. She was born Nov. 6, 1912, in Horton, Mo., to Joseph T. Butler and Beulah Mae Humble Butler. She married Martin Doelling on May 14, 1935, in Nevada, and he preceded her in death on March 16, 1999...

Darrell Dennis Dale, age 56, passed away on Saturday, May 31, 2008, at his home in Rich Hill, after a courageous year-long battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 5, 1952, in Butler, Mo., the second of three children, and was reared in Rich Hill, by his loving grandparents, Homer and Menta Dale. He attended school in Rich Hill and some of his happiest, early memories were of Cub Scout and Boy Scout activities and playing of football...

A tornado warning was issued for portions of southern Vernon County shortly after 11 p.m., Tuesday, with severe storms heading for Sheldon, Moundville and Bronaugh, just two days after storms tore through Schell City. On Monday, storms pelted the small northeast Vernon County with large, nearly tennis-ball-sized hail. Tuesday night, as the storm approached, friends and family in other parts of the county waited for word on what had happened. Spotters were activated throughout the county...

Cleanup from the recent storm damage in Schell City is already nearing completion. Early Monday afternoon a violent storm wreaked havoc on the town, uprooting trees, tearing down power lines and pelting the town with hail. According to city officials, two homes still remain without power, but all other electrical outages have been restored. ...
