Elaine D. Gardiner, 95, Nevada, died on Wednesday, Jan. 11, at Barone Alzheimer's Care Center in Nevada. Services will be held at a later date.

Mickie Rae Boyd, 66, of Nevada, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at Select Specialty Hospital in Springfield following a lengthy illness. Mickie was born Dec. 31, 1950, in Nevada to Leland Garwood and Helen Osborn Garwood. On Jan. 28, 1978, she was married to Randy Thomas Boyd and he preceded her in death on Oct. 8, 2015...

There is a saying that love and hate are very similar. This past weekend, I experienced both sentiments, in almost equal proportions. My PBS channel aired the entire six years of the "Downton Abbey" series. There was no way I could watch all of the episodes, reminding myself, there were football playoff games and other items on my agenda but as you might suspect, that plan in no way prevented me from tirelessly watching multiple reruns...

After a month-long lay-off, the Cottey Comets basketball team triumphantly returned to the court Wednesday night in Lexington, Mo., hammering Wentworth Military Academy 71-47. With the Region 16 victory, the Comets improve to 3-7 overall (1-0 Region)...

The Nevada Lady Tigers were beat 53-21 Thursday night by the St. Pius X Lady Warriors. The game, played at Nevada Middle School, was pushed up a day due to weather concerns. The Lady Tigers were unable to play on their home court, Wynn gym, as it was being occupied by the wrestling team for a meet with Carthage...

It was a productive outing on the hardwood for the Nevada Tigers Thursday night in Kansas City. Nevada topped the St. Pius X Warriors 58-52 for its first West Central Conference road victory of the season. In addition, Nevada junior forward Clay Gayman eclipsed 1,000 career prep points, needing just two-and-a-half seasons to make the achievement a reality...

Elizabeth "Beth" Brown age 90 of Nevada passed away on Friday, Jan. 13, at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin following a brief illness. Beth was born March 11, 1926, in St. John, Kan., to Joseph and Pearl (Baker) Woodruff. On Aug. 24, 1946, she was married Jim Brown in Ft. Scott, and he survives of the home...

The first couple of weeks in January is when all the elected office holders meet with the commissioners to discuss and set their budgets for the year. The first time I sat through a budget meeting, one of the commissioners jokingly told me this would be "initiation by fire." I had already talked with other sheriffs across the state before my first budget meeting and had heard some very troubling stories about the arguing and fighting that went on between sheriffs and their commissioners...
