Then and now 9/11
(Column ~ 09/11/03)
With the refurbished Sen. William Joel Stone memorial due to be rededicated on October 11, perhaps it's time for another look at the man himself. As a longtime fixture of the courthouse yard the monument tends to lead modern Nevada folk to fancy Stone's link to the community was more intimate than it really was. ...

(Local News ~ 09/11/03)
There's good news and bad news when it comes to the Nevada R-5's performance in meeting state and local school improvement goals under the state's MAP testing program and the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Today marks the second anniversary of the terrorists' attack on the two New York Trade Center Towers. The memories and anger are still fresh; the sense of utter helplessness and marginality still weigh heavily. If it's hard for some of us to understand people who, like the hijacker pilots, would willingly give up their lives to kill so many hundreds of unwitting Americans, can we really understand any better the hundreds of New York City firemen and policemen who gave up their lives to save the lives of countless strangers? I saw a 35-page play last night that is as bright and true an example of the "cathartic" in theater as I've seen in all my life. ...
