Catherine Hinkle doesn't look like an action-movie hero. She's a soft spoken petite woman who takes obvious pride in her home. There's no bandolier of ammunition slung across her chest, no automatic weapon dangling from her shoulder. Mirandia Fowler is a whiz in the kitchen, and a week ago her culinary prowess earned her a silver medal in a national student competition conducted in Philadelphia, Pa. Tomato growers have begun to notice with alarming frequency that the bottom of their tomato fruit is rotting off. Pat Miller, West Central Region agronomy specialist for the University of Missouri Outreach and Extension office, said that there has been more complaints this year about blossom-end rot than any of the 14 years that she has been in this area. ...
